So overall although it's not perfect I'm feeling better about this being workable once I get used to it.Īdamg67 wroteSo, I've got the MIDI side of things working, and with bass clef and tab too - thaks for that, bit of an odd way to have to do things but it works.
So, I think I have convinced myself that it's a good thing if I have to write out the notation again - I won't learn anything if I don't. I had a think about what I'm trying to achieve, and one of the main reasons for getting Notion is to improve my reading and writing of musical notation. I think for that scenario I probably don't need the instruments in Notion so much - I knew when I bought it that they probably wouldn't get used. If I do want to use any of the Notion instruments I can just rewire them, that's perfect but in any case when I use MIDI it's for drums or electronica to go alongside audio guitar and bass work and I have it all set up in Studio One. Presumably if I ever wanted to go from notation back to MIDI for any reason, or not bother with Notion once a track is complete, I can just record the MIDI to the track in Studio One, so long as I don't edit it in there. Thanks for posting the pics as well, I'll give it a go. Just my lack of MIDI experience I think, having always been an audio guy. Johnny, you're a lifesaver! That all makes sense, I think I just had it in my head that rewire was supposed to be the answer, I hadn't thought about the virtual MIDI cable way.
Someone please tell me I've got the wrong end of the stick, as I'm feeling like I've bought the wrong products here - I went down the Studio One route as it came with my FireStudio, and I don't really want to start all over again, having wasted a lot of money (I upgraded to studio one producer, and I don't fancy my chances of getting a refund on Notion). I'll end up with 2 sets of virtual instruments, effects, mixing, the lot, and no one view that shows me all my tracks and MIDI - it all seems really pointless and hard for a rubbish result. So, I have a load of existing Studio One projects with MIDI tracks, but if I now want to edit them in Notion I can't? I have to export them, load them into Notion, set up all the same virtual instruments again, and then play the audio back out through studio one? If that's true, it's just awful, I've basically got two seperate DAWs, one for score based MIDI and one for audio and other MIDI, and I have to copy half my tracks across and then wire them back together. After a read of the manuas for both, a couple of hours playing and some searching on the net it seems this isn't true? Notion can't act as a score editor for Studio One and send it MIDI data, all it can do is send audio back to Studio One? And it can't work on an existing Studio One MIDI track? I've just bought Notion to use with Studio One v2, thinking from the sales pitch that I would effectively be able to use Notion as a score editor for my Studio One tracks.
